Who publishes this site

Generation Liberty is published by One Generation Away, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean One Generation Away. This policy covers the Generation Liberty website and the email newsletters we send from it.

The short version

You can read everything on this site without giving us your name, your email address or anything else. We ask for personal information in exactly two places: the newsletter signup form, which needs an email address, and the donation form, which needs the billing details a card payment requires. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with unaffiliated third parties for their own marketing.

What we collect, and when

When you read the site

Loading a page produces the ordinary web server record that every site receives: the page requested, the date and time, the referring page, an IP address, and a description of the browser and device. We use these records to keep the site running, to diagnose faults, and to understand which articles are being read. We do not use them to build a profile of you as an individual.

When you subscribe to a newsletter

The signup form collects your email address, together with which list you asked for. We store it in our own database and also in Brevo, the service that sends the newsletters. We do not ask for your name, and the form does not require one.

One Generation Away operates a single Brevo account across the titles it publishes, so your address is held in an email platform shared with our other publications. It is used only to send you the Generation Liberty lists you asked for. Every newsletter carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.

When you donate

The donation form collects your first and last name, email address, billing address, an optional phone number, an optional message, and your card number, expiration date and security code. Your card details pass through our server to PayTrace, our payment processor, which carries out the transaction.

We do not store your card number or security code. They are held only for the moment it takes to pass them to PayTrace and are never written to our database. PayTrace retains transaction records under its own terms. We keep the donation receipt information that a 501(c)(3) organization is required to keep, including your name, contact details and the amount and date of your gift.

If you write to us

Correspondence you send us, including story tips, pitches and corrections, is kept so that we can answer it and follow up on it.

If you work here

Editors and contributors have accounts in the newsroom system, which stores a name, an email address and an encrypted password. Reader accounts do not exist on this site.

Measurement and analytics

We measure page traffic using Vercel Analytics, which reports visits in aggregate. It sets no cookie and does not track you from one site to another.

The site is also built to support Google Analytics, StatCounter and browser push notifications through OneSignal. None of the three is switched on at the time stated above. If we enable any of them, this policy will be updated and dated before we do, and push notifications will always require you to opt in through your browser.

We count how often promotional units on the site are shown and clicked. Those are running totals only and are not linked to any individual reader.

Cookies and local storage

Preferences you set yourself, such as the reading and display controls, are stored by your own browser and are not transmitted to us. Clearing your browser data removes them. We do not set advertising cookies, and we do not run cross-site behavioral advertising.

The newsroom system sets a session cookie for signed-in editors. It has no effect on readers.

Material hosted elsewhere

Some pages embed content served by other companies, most commonly YouTube video players, and some article images are served from the site they were first published on. Those providers can see that your browser requested their content, and their own privacy terms cover that request. Links out to other sites are governed by whoever runs them.

Who we share information with

We share personal information only with the service providers that make the site work, and only so that they can perform that work for us:

• Brevo, which sends the newsletter and stores subscriber addresses.
• PayTrace, which processes donation card payments.
• Vercel, which hosts the site and measures page traffic.
• Neon, which runs the database behind the newsroom system.
• Cloudflare, which stores and delivers images and other media.

We do not sell your personal information, and we have not sold or shared it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We may disclose information where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect our rights, our readers or the public.

How long we keep it

Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Donation records are kept for as long as tax and charity reporting rules require. Server logs are kept for a short operational period and then discarded. Correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful to the matter it concerns.

Your choices

• Unsubscribe using the link at the foot of any newsletter, at any time.
• Ask what we hold about you, and we will tell you.
• Ask us to correct anything that is wrong.
• Ask us to delete what we hold, subject to records we are legally required to keep, such as donation receipts.
• Object to processing or ask us to restrict it.

Write to the address at the foot of this page. We will respond within 45 days. We will not treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.

If you are a California resident, the rights above are the rights the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you, including the right to know, the right to delete, the right to correct and the right to opt out of sale or sharing. As stated above, we do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of. You may use an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf.

Younger readers

This site is written for a young readership and is used in classrooms. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. The newsletter and donation forms are intended for adults. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, write to us and we will delete it. Teachers using the site with students under 13 need not have their students submit anything: every article, quiz and document on the site can be read and printed without providing any information at all.

Security

We maintain administrative, technical and physical safeguards appropriate to the information we hold. The site is served over an encrypted connection, card details are passed directly to our payment processor rather than stored, and access to the newsroom system requires an account. No transmission over the internet can be guaranteed completely secure, and we cannot promise absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change, and we will change the effective date at the top when we do. Material changes will be described here rather than made silently.
