The Second Amendment prohibits the government from infringing on the individual right to keep and bear arms; in other words, citizens have the right to own and carry weapons like guns. Congress enacted the amendment in 1789, but it wasn’t ratified until 1791.
Amendment II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
For much of the nation’s history, the Second Amendment was dormant, viewed as limited to militia service. However, the Supreme Court has more recently ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees individuals the right to keep and bear arms for their security.
