But there has never been anything quite like artificial intelligence, known as AI. Over the weekend, President Donald Trump announced the formation of a new AI Force to help quell some of those fears.
Trump’s AI Force
Trump revealed plans for an AI Force in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, writing in part, “We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System.”
The president said the AI Force will be formed in much the same way as the Space Force, which Trump established in his first term — although it is unclear whether the AI Force will become another military branch. Trump also announced a new government position known as the AI Czar, who will likely help lead the new AI Force.
“AI is the next Industrial Revolution, or Internet, but will be even larger and more impactful, possibly as much as 25% of our Country’s GDP. We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!” the president’s post concluded.
Trump later reiterated his support for AI development, writing on Truth Social, “I’m not going to stifle Growth, of something that will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution, or the Internet, itself.” The president noted that the Department of Justice and other law enforcement bodies “will rein things in” if necessary.
Calls to Slow Down
Trump’s announcement comes as calls to slow AI development grow, including from prominent industry leaders, such as xAI founder Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
Amodei recently warned that there are "real dangers” associated with AI but insisted: "If we build in the right way, I think the probability of something bad happening is very low. If we build in the wrong way, the probability of something bad happening is very high."
The president basically dismissed requests to slow down AI, arguing the technology is the “oil of the next 50 years.”
